Writeboard is a website that allows people to create a piece of text, build on it, edit it, compare edits to previous versions, and share the text with others without permanently losing even the first draft. It allows the authors and viewers to make as many edits as they want and for the changes to be seen. This website was very easy to use. You go on the website, create a title for the writeboard, create a password, and type in your email address. It then opens a page where you are free to write at will. When you are finished, you just save it. At this point, you are free to go to the top of the page and edit your text whenever you want. Once edited and saved, there is a tab in the right column to show each version created. Above the different versions is a button to “Invite people”. When people are invited, they have access to the text and may also edit it, and the edits will be credited to the correct person. If a person has many writeboards, they can have a “Backpack” that will keep them all sorted so that you do not have to remember multiple usernames and passwords; however, Backpack does have a monthly fee. This website is very versatile and I would use it in several ways in my classroom. I would introduce Writeboards to the class by creating a short story with them. I would then show them how to edit the story and if I were in a computer room, I would get the students into small groups and allow the groups to edit the writeboard. During the next lesson, we would go over the edits and compare the changes made with the original. This would give the students an opportunity to see not only how the website works, but also how the process of writing a story works. I would also use this website for Literature circles, allowing the students to make predictions, summarize the readings, and edit their viewpoints as the story progressed. I would recommend this website in your Reading/Language Arts repertoire. http://bookbuilder.cast.org/view.php?op=view&book=35466&page=1
